Martin FONCHA

Martin Foncha is an experienced professional with several years of senior management experience and vast knowledge in the financial sector. He is the founder of Saham Life Insurance and has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Ecobank Cameroon, CEO for Saham Life Insurance; he is currently serving as an Independent Non-Executive Director with MTN Mobile Money Corporation Cameroon and as Board Chairman for Standard Chartered Bank Cameroon.

Leveraging over 29 years of transformative experience in the financial sector, Martin plays a pivotal role in guiding CFG-Holdings' mission to redefine financial services across Africa. His counsel focuses on empowering teams, fostering innovation, and building a sustainable framework for growth across CFG-Holdings' subsidiaries.

 

Previous Work Experience

Martin Foncha’s illustrious career spans nearly three decades, marked by leadership roles in banking, insurance, and corporate governance:

  • Chairman of the Board of Directors, Standard Chartered Bank Cameroon (2019 – Present): Spearheaded strategic initiatives to elevate business performance and set new industry standards. Also served as Independent Non-Executive Director, contributing to governance, audit, risk management, and credit committees.
  • Chairman of the Board of Directors, Ecobank Cameroon (2007 – 2017): Oversaw governance and audit strategies, ensuring operational excellence and compliance.
  • CEO, Sanlam Life Insurance Cameroon (1995 – 2019): Founded and transformed All Life Insurance Company into Sanlam Life Insurance Cameroon, a leading subsidiary of the Sanlam Group.
  • Board Member, MoMo from MTN (2020 – Present): Played a key role in governance and remuneration strategies.
  • Executive Leadership, Saham Life Insurance Ghana LTD (2010 – 2022): Acted as a Non-Executive Director and contributed to audit committee oversight.
  • Leadership Roles, American Life Insurance Company (ALICO) (1979 – 1995): Held various management positions, including Country Manager and General Manager, demonstrating excellence in operational leadership.

  • Founder and Visionary Leader: Established All Life Insurance Company, now known as Sanlam Life Insurance Cameroon, and guided it to success within the Pan-African insurance market.
  • Corporate Governance Advocate: Chaired governance and audit committees for prominent organizations, ensuring ethical and transparent business practices.
  • Educational Foundation: Holds a Master of Science in Engineering and Industrial Management, and a Bachelor of Science with honors in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
  • Professional Certifications: Completed the Fundamentals of Life and Health Insurance course (LOMA) and the Model Home Office Training Program at ALICO, enhancing his expertise in insurance and financial services.
  • Industry Leadership: Served as Chairman of the Association of Insurance Companies in Cameroon, contributing to the growth and regulation of the sector.
